A process for the production of an aromatic or cycloaliphatic dicarboxylic bis-glycol hemiester comprises reacting the corresponding dicarboxylic acid with a 1,2-alkylene oxide at elevated temperatures and superatmospheric pressure in the presence of a solvent and catalyst wherein the starting materials are reacted in the presence of the dicarboxylic bis-glycol hemi-ester itself as at least the major proportion by weight of the solvent and catalyst throughout the reaction. The preparation of the bisglycol hemiester of terephthalic acid is exemplified; other suitable acids are phthalic, isophthalic, cyclohexane dicarboxylic and naphthalene dicarboxylic acids. |
