A secondary halomethyl phosphine oxide of formula Hal.CH2.P(O)HR, where R = alkyl or aryl opt. subst. by halogen, hydroxy, carboxy, aldehyde or ketone is hydrolysed at pH 8-13 by alkali metal hydroxide or alcoholate. The salt may be acidified to obtain the free acid. (I) are useful as hydrolysis catalysts and as intermediates for surfactants, emulsifiers and flameproofing agents. |
