A pile fabric is made by filling a series of cavities (5) with selected dyes, placing a loop of yarn (10) into each cavity and securing a backing (11) to the loops. In Figures 1, 2 and 3 (not shown) dye containes (4) discharge selected dyes into cavities (3) in a drum (1), pressers (6) insert loops of yarn (10) into the cavities (3) to absorb the dyes and a backing (11) is applied. Heaters and/or coolers (9) may be provided and the loops may be cut by knives (12). Warpwise and/or weftwise reinforcement or a mesh reinforcement (Figure 6, not shown) may be provided. |
