<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To exhibit a level of importance of a document to a user with the view paying attention to a role based on discrimination of a role of documents etc. from a role of a phrase in a sentence. <P>SOLUTION: The unique expressions in a received document are extracted and furthermore, when there is a role, the role is extracted and stored in a unique expression/role storage section 14. A query reception section 15 receives a query of a natural sentence. A search operation section 17 compares the unique expression of the query with the unique expression of registration documents held in the unique expression/role storage section 14, and outputs predetermined writing as a search result. A representative role determination section 18 refers to information on the role of the unique expression/role memory section 14 about documents contained in the search result, takes out the role of the unique expression appears in the sentence and determines the role representing the documents concerned.
