Salt (4) is added to cooled water (10), which lowers its freezing point, to prepare a liquid ice product. The liquid phase is drained to leave the solid phase as ice crystals. The product is fed into a tank in which the solid phase naturally occupies the upper part and is expelled under the combined effect of the supply pressure and gravity. Drainage is effected by filtering of the product through a part of the tanks wall.
