A user preregisters with a bank or financial institution by providing the user's photograph (402) and signature (402). PortraitCheques<(TM)> are a cash-like financial instrument that provides positive visual identification of the owner in that the owner's preregistered picture (402) is printed on the face of the check. PortraitCheques<(TM)> provide positive identification in that the owner's signature is printed on the face of the check so that the owner can countersign the PortraitCheque<(TM)> in front of the bank or merchant. The user accesses PortraitCheque<(TM)> services (400) through a network. The PortraitCheque<(TM)> service verifies (403) the user's authority to request PortraitCheques<(TM)>, confirms guarantee of the funds (407), debits the user's account, credits the guarantor's account, and fills the user's order by formatting and generating the preparation of a PortraitCheque<(TM)> according to the user's request (409).
