<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surgical instrument including a firing drive device configured to advance a cutting member and/or a staple driver within an end effector and a brake device configured to prevent or at least partially inhibit the relative movement of the cutting member and/or staple driver. <P>SOLUTION: The surgical instrument can further include a firing member movably engaged with the cutting member, for example, a band connected to the firing member and a reel. The band can be configured to be wound around the reel. The brake device can be selectively engaged with the reel and/or the band to prevent or limit the movement of the band. The brake device can include a brake surface so that a friction force can be generated between the band and the brake surface from the relative movement between them. The friction force can hold the firing member at a prescribed position till a sufficient force is applied to the firing member to overcome the friction force. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT |
