PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and device for reading a serial data stream in automation technology equipment.SOLUTION: The present invention relates to a method for reading a serial data stream in devices (10, 100) of an automation technology. In the method, the data stream is encoded to include at least two symbols (K, L) which are distinguishable by a time interval between two successive signal edges, the data stream is delivered to read units (70, 170), the read units include symbol detection units (73, 173, 273, 373, 473, 573) allocating the symbols (K, L) to a time sequence of the signal edges, and allocate the symbols (K, L), and thus a time including the latest symbol duration time (T) of the latest allocated symbol and at least one old symbol duration time (T) of preceding one of the symbols is taken into account.
