PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a document retrieval system that can automatically update retrieval data. SOLUTION: The document retrieval system divides text data being retrieved into words, generates retrieval data with a prefix code and a suffix notation and implements a full-text search and retrieval of the text data. The retrieval system comprises a text data storage means 102, a word storage means that stores the words extracted from the text data with knowledge of a natural language characteristic pattern, a dividing means 103 that divides the text data into the words with an extraction word stored in the word storage means, a storage means 104 that stores information to divide the word, a retrieval data generating means 105 that generates the retrieval data by the information to divide the word and the text data, and an update data searching means 106 that updates the retrieval data if the information to divide the word has been updated in a case that an update state of the information is checked. The system updates the retrieval data reflecting automatically divisions of the word by the latest information in the existing registered texts when the text data are added.
