<p>A system for providing a high speed digital communication path between the processor of a host computer (10) and the processors of one or more remote computers (22A-22B). The high speed digital communication path allows a remote computer (22A-22B) to efficiently share the resources of the larger host computer (10) such as high speed magnetic disk drives and printers. A host interface (12) located at the host computer (10) is connected to the internal host bus (100) of the host computer (10). The host interface (12) includes a host port (108) and components which provide for the transfer of data from the host bus (100) to the host port (108). The data bits presented at the host port are arranged in a parallel format. A communication cable (16) conveys the parallel data bits from the host port (108) to a remote port (200) in a remote interface (20) at a remote computer (22A-22B). The remote interface (20) provides a random access memory (218) and components for transferring data from the remote bus (226) to the random access memory (218) and vice-versa. Data bits presented at the remote port (200) are also conveyed to the random access memory (218). The host interface (12) and the remote interface (20) include control structures to supervise and arbitrate accesses to the communication cable (16) and to the random access memory (218).</p> |
