In a calender for the surface treatment of paper webs, a soft roll (14) and a hard roll (14') have assigned to them a lead-in protection element (34) which can rotate about the axis (38) of the hard roll (14') in such a way that the distance (S) from the lead-in protection nose (40) assigned to the hard roll (14') remains equally large and, on actuating a spindle drive (44), the distance of the other lead-in protection nose (42) from the soft roll (14) can be altered, it being ensured by means of the special arrangement of the parts that, on opening the calender, the distance (s) of the lead-in protection nose (42) from the soft roll (14) remains essentially maintained to the desired extent. <IMAGE>
