A process for prepg. 5,6-dialkoxy anthranilic acid of formula (I) comprises (a) reacting a cpd. of formula (II) with pivalic acid cpds. of formual X'-C(=O)-R5, (b) reacting with org. lithium cpds. of formula R4-Li to provide dilithium salt, (c) reacting with CO2 to give anilide, (d) reacting with esterification agent to prep. ester, (e) reacting with acid anhydride of formula (RCO)2O, and (f) base- hydrolysing. In the formulas, R, R1 and R2 are each lower alkyl; R4= n-Bu or sec.-Bu; R5= tert. -Bu; X= H or halogen; X'= OCOC(CH3)3 or halogen. (I) are useful as an intemediate for prodn. substd. quinazolindion, which is useful as a cardiotonic.
