PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an aromatic alkyl substitution product of hydroquinone from a hydroquinone and an alcohol by a relatively small reactor without using a catalyst having high corrosiveness. SOLUTION: A hydroquinone of the formula [R1 and R2 are each independently a hydrogen atom, a 1-10C straight-chain or branched-chain alkyl group; Rs are each independently a 1-10C straight-chain or branched-chain alkyl group; n is an integer of 0-2] is reacted with a monohydric or a dihydric alcohol in the presence of a catalyst under a condition to make the alcohol in a supercritical state to replace at least one or more hydrogen atoms on the aromatic ring of the hydroquinone with the alkyl groups of the alcohol.
