PERSONAL ENVIRONMENT SYSTEM

A personal environment system for creating a user-definable local environment within a localized zone in an ambient space, comprises a modular housing mountable in said localized zone and having an air inlet (14), an air outlet (22) incorporating a diffuser for distributing conditioned air into said localized zone, an air flow channel (21) between said air inlet and said air outlet, and a channel (23) for a thermal fluid for supplying or carrying away heat. A blower means (11) causes air to flow through the air channel (21). A heat exchanger (34) between the air flow channel (21) and the thermal fluid channel (23) includes a thermoelectric heat pump (32) to effect transfer of heat between air flowing through the air flow channel (21) and the thermal fluid channel (23). A control unit permits (27) the user to set the amount of heating or cooling applied by the heat pump (32) to air flowing through said air channel (21) to permit the user to control the air temperature within the localized zone according to personal comfort requirements independently of the general air temperature of the ambient space.
