PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a friction damper having stable damping property for a long period by minimizing the wear of a sliding layer without being affected by corrosion. SOLUTION: The friction damper 1 comprises a base 2, a support 4 fixed to a long member 35 of the base 2 and having a through-hole 3, a rod 7 extending through the through-hole 3 of the support 4, movable relative to the support 4 in an axial direction X and having a columnar body 85, a stainless steel cylinder body 16 mounted on an outer surface 15 of the body 85 of the rod 7, and a friction member 9 having a cylinder portion 8 laid in the through-hole 3 of the support 4 between the support 4 and the stainless steel cylinder body 16 and fixed non-movable relative to the stainless steel cylinder body 16 when moved in the axial direction X with the movement of the rod 7 relative to the base 2 in the same direction.
