The mechanism which couples large coaxially positioned pipe ends (2,3) includes a collar (4) which has a widened muff (5,6) at each end, which fits freely around the pipe ends. Inside the muff is a packing ring (7) and a three-sector tilting ring (11), of larger radial dimensions than the radial distance between the inner wall (12) of the muff and the pipe ends. Dimensioning is such that after insertion of the pipe ends into the muff with the packing, the tilting ring bore secures itself against the pipe end circumference to prevent sliding movement. A pliers unit may be used for fitting and dismantling the coupling mechanism.
