PURPOSE:To detect the hydrogen donative capability of a coal liquification solvent at a high level by adding >=1pts.wt. anthracene to 1pt.wt. liquefied petroleum solvent, bringing the same into reaction under prescribed conditions and detecting the amt. of the 9,10-dihydroanthracene in the resultant reaction product. CONSTITUTION:The anthracene is added at >=1pt.wt. to 1pt.wt. coal liquification solvent and the reaction is carried out under the conditions of 350-450 deg.C, 1-60min and >=50kg/cm<2>G hydrogen pressure in the presence of iron oxide and sulfur. The amt. of the 9,10-dihydroanthracene in the resultant reaction product is measured by <1>H-NMR (3.9ppm chemical shift). The amt. of the donative hydrogen is determined by comparing the measured amt. with the result of the measurement obtd. by using an internal standard. The amt. of the donative hydrogen is determined nearly constantly by adding >=1pts.wt. anthracene to 1pt.wt. sample solvent.
