PURPOSE: To stably operate an air conditioner for heating by appropriately maintaining the degree of superheat of a refrigerant at the outlet of a refrigerant heater by detecting the outlet and inlet refrigerant temperatures of the heater and controlling the capacity of the heater so that the difference between the detected temperatures may fall within a fixed range. CONSTITUTION: In a method for controlling operation of air conditioner, a outlet temperature detecting thermistor 11 which detects the output refrigerant temperature T3 of a refrigerant heater 8 and an inlet temperature detecting thermistor 12 which detects the inlet refrigerant temperature T4 of the heater 8 are used. At the time of operating an air conditioner for heating, a variable capacity compressor 1 is first controlled based on the differenceΔT12 between a set room temperature T1 and the actual room temperature T2 . Then, when the differenceΔT34 between the outlet refrigerant temperature T3 and inlet refrigerant temperature T4 of the heater 8 is smaller than a certain value t2 the heater 8 is operated at the maximum capacity, when the differenceΔT34 is larger than the value t2 , the capacity of the heater 8 is reduced in steps. When the differenceΔT34 becomes larger than a value t3 , the heater 8 is stopped. Thus the capacity of the heater 8 is controlled so that the differenceΔT34 may fall with in the range between the values t2 and t3 .
