The contour emphasizing circuit for a picture reading system includes a first latch for latching image data, a second latch for re-latching the image data latched by the first latch, a third latch for re-latching the image data latched by the second latch, a first subtractor for subtracting the image data latched by the first latch from the image data latched by the second latch, a second subtractor for subtracting the image data latched by the third latch from the image data latched by the second latch, first and second contour detection/amplifiers, and an adder for adding the output of the first and second contour detection/amplifiers to the image data latched by the second latch, thereby simplifying the configuration of the system.
