摘要	<p>An information carrier (17) has depressions (20) representing information and a reader includes a cylinder (11) defining a passage along which the information-bearing portion of the carrier can be moved, a contact element (24) mounted in the cylinder to be moved by the carrier in a manner corresponding to the depressions, a photo-electric emitter-detector pair (25) for providing an electrical signal representing the movements of the contact element and the lever (26) for transmitting motion from the contact element to the emitter-detector pair. The latter is disposed adjacent to an end of the cylinder remote from the contact element and the lever is mounted in a channel defined at the periphery of the cylinder.</p>
