The invention relates to a process in which compounds having the general formula III, in which Alk is a lower alkyl group and X is a leaving group such as halogen or a mesyl or tosyl group, are reacted with dimethylamine in the presence of a suitable solvent, resulting in dimethylamino esters having the general formula II being obtained, and with 2-carboxy-3-[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl]-N- methyl-1H-indole-5- methanesulphonamide I being obtained by saponifying these esters. <IMAGE> <IMAGE> I:R=H II:R=ALK
