The mechanism, designed to allow a basketball panel (1) to be deployed or retracted in relation to a supporting surface (5), has two pairs of arms (13, 14; 17, 18) pivoted to uprights (6, 7; 9, 10) on the base and the back of the panel respectively. One pair of arms (13, 14) is pivoted to the inner surfaces of the uprights and the other pair (17, 18) to their outer surfaces. In a variant of the design each of the arms can be in two sections set at an oblique angle to one another. The arms pivot about fixing screws, and the panel is deployed and retracted with the aid of a winch (20, 21) and cable (23).
