The character generator (10) is used for illuminating a photoconductor (14) within the printer. It has a carrier (12) supporting a number of light-emitting elements (20), positioned one after the other in a row. The light-emitting elements lie in thermal contact with the carrier. The carrier has a cooling element (50) extending along the row, with parallel feed and return channels (76.82) for a cooling medium. The cooling element has a hollow interior (60) receiving a separate profile element (62). It has an X-shaped cross-section, dividing it into the feed and return channels.
