Gaseous sample mixture and gaseous reactant mixture are brought together at one edge of a shallow disc-shaped reaction chamber. The exhaust opening of the reaction chamber is located diametrically from the mixture inlet. A light transmitting element forms one wall of the reaction chamber and the reacting gases pass through the reaction chamber in a plane substantially parallel to the light transmitting element.
