The safety system has an electrical monitoring circuit which rapidly activates a pyrotechnical gas generator on detecting a hazardous situation. The gas inflates the air bag. The battery supplied circuit contains at least one sensor which makes the circuit as soon as it detects the hazardous situation an electrical igniter for the pyrotechnical device. The sensor, igniter and battery are close together and connected by short leads. A monitoring system detects when the vehicle is used and brings the circuit into the monitoring state. The monitoring state is interrupted when the vehicle is not used for a defined period.
