A control system 100 and method for control of grid frequency in an electric power grid are described. A grid frequency is monitored by monitoring devices 120 at one or more predefined locations in the grid, and a determination is made whether one or more conditions relating to the monitored frequency have been met (for example, whether the grid frequency is too low). A control period is initiated during which the grid frequency at one or more of the predefined locations is to be controlled based on the determination. One or more variation characteristics relating to a variation, during the control period, in grid frequency are determined. Control instructions, comprising instructions to control power flow to and/or from each of a first plurality of power units 119 so as to control the monitored frequency, are sent. The control instructions are generated on the basis of profile information relating to the power units and the determined one or more variation characteristics. The power units may be power generators 106, appliances in residential premises 113 or industrial premises 114, or small scale power generators such as wind turbines 116 or solar panels 115. A forecast of grid frequency may be made by fitting a polynomial function to the monitored frequency using a least squares method. |
