PURPOSE:To construct a self-heating type cathode for a cathode-ray tube having quick start of thermoelectric emission and high durability by using a mixed compound of thermoelectro-emissive material components and electro-conductive material components. CONSTITUTION:The cathode is made of a mixed compound of thermoelectro- emissive material components and electro-conductive material components. As for the thermoelectro-emissive material component BaO having a low work function and good electron emissivity or a compound oxide of BaP and SiO2 and/or CaO is suitable. As for the electro-conductive material to be mixed to the oxide those materials such as metal, high melting boride, carbide, nitride or silicide, and semiconductor can be used. And in order to reduce the variation of characteristics during operation, it is desirable to use a good heat-resistive material such as high melting compound or oxide semiconductor and so on. The mixed compound of the thermoelectro-emissive material and the electro- conductive material is formed and sintered to a body from which a sample shaped as shown in the figure is cut out to make the cathode 1 for the cathode- ray tube.
