The refuse falls from the top of the tower (3) to the bottom, the tower having receiving apertures (19-21) along its length into which different refuse fractions are taken. During the fall of the refuse, its lateral movements are affected partly by deflector surfaces (8-13), and partly by fans (16-18), causing it to execute a zig-zag movement.
