An overtravel detector provided on an angular rotary shaft of an industrial robot and capable of mechanically setting and detecting a limit position of turning of the same rotary shaft is provided with a pattern plate (22) fixed to a rotary shaft (12) of a wrist (10) of a robot machine body, adapted to be turned in accordance with the turning of the rotary shaft (12) and having two groove passages (24) for setting a limit position of turning to a position a predetermined distance away from an original position of turning, and a detecting member consisting of a limit switch (32) adapted to generate an overtravel signal when it contacts turning limit position setting barriers (24a, 24b) provided at the end portions of the two groove passages (24) in the pattern plate (22).
