PURPOSE:To enable nondestructive readout of information and write/read of information with high sensitivity by irradiating the optical recording medium made of a photochromic compound with a light different in wavelength from a recording light and an erasing light to read. CONSTITUTION:The optical recording medium is formed by dispersing the photochromic compound into a stretched film to orient the transition moment of light absorption in a prescribed direction. The information readout can be executed by irradiating the compound with the light in the wavelength region of absorption to change its absorption spectra and to write in information or to rewrite it, and at the same time to change its apparent angle of rotation. And irradiating it with a light not absorbed by the medium to detect the change of the angle of rotation and to read out the information, because the apparent angle of rotation can be recognized in the wavelength region not causing the absorption of the compound, thus permitting the information to be read out without destructing it and to be written in and read out with high sensitivity. |
