Two base plates each carrying semi-conductor and counter electrode layers but each having edge zones free of these layers are mechanically connected along the outer edge only of the edge zones so that the plates form a corrosionproof casing in which the layers are isolated from the connection by a region free of them. In Figs. 1 and 2, the plates 1, 2 are dished and are fixed together at 1a, 2a by welding, soldering or glueing. They may also be joined by independent overlapping end pieces or through overlapping parts formed integral with the plates. A layer of metal or insulating material, such as a ceramic inter-loop soldered to both plates, may be put between the plates which may in this case be flat, and the entire exterior may be protected by a coating of cadmium, while the interior is filled with a solid or liquid corrosion-proof protecting material. A lead 3 passes through a plug 4 of insulating material between the edges of the plate and forms part of a T-shaped plate, the cross-member 5 of which is corrugated to make resilient electrical contact with the counter electrodes. In a modification a single carrier plate has two such coated regions and is folded between them to give a partly formed container. Exterior connection to the counter electrode layers may be made through the plates as in Fig. 4. The corrugated plate 13 is held between the head of a conducting bolt 17 and an insulating washer 14. Further washers 15 and 16 insulate the bolt from the case while the whole assembly is held together by the nut 18. Specification 681,790 is referred to.</p> |
