The present invention provides an LCD device with which the liquid crystal molecules can be rotated by an electrical field for faster response during both rise and fall, the LCD device having exceptional transmittance when displaying. This LCD device has upper and lower substrates, and a liquid crystal layer sandwiched by the upper and lower substrates, wherein the upper and lower substrates each have electrodes, the electrodes of either the upper or lower substrate being configured from a pair of wire electrodes on the liquid-crystal-layer side, and electrodes on the side opposite the liquid-crystal-layer side. The remaining upper or lower substrate may have a dielectric layer on the liquid-crystal-layer side of the electrodes. The LCD device is configured such that, when a potential difference is brought about across the pair of wire electrodes, the ratio (E1/E2) of the vertical electric field component E1 and the lateral electric field component E2, defined by a specific equation, is at least 0.479 but not more than 0.845. |
