A sewing machine comprising a needle zigzag motion mechanism 7, an operable apparatus, such as knee lifter 2, for controlling the width of the zigzag, and means for detecting the amount of operation 20. A range setting apparatus 9 sets the range of zigzag width that can be controlled by the operable apparatus. The width of the needle zigzag is variable, within the set range, according to the amount of operation upon the operable apparatus. The range setting apparatus may be capable of setting a minimum and maximum zigzag width. There may be a linear relationship between the movement of the knee lifter and the width of the zigzag. Alternatively for a given range of movement of the knee lifter, the zigzag width may remain constant. The speed of the sewing machine may correspond to the zigzag width. The operable apparatus may be capable of moving the presser upward and downward if the machine is in a stopped state. |
