PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a flame-retardant copolyester which has an improved drip resistant property, when in contact with a flame, and a good self-extinguishing property, and gives flame-retardant polyester fibers having good physical properties and heat resistance, and to provide flame retardant fibers comprising the copolymer. SOLUTION: The flame-retardant copolyester excellent in drip resistance is characterized by comprising a copolyester copolymerized with a specific phosphaphenanthrene-based organic phosphorus compound in an amount of 0.3 to 1.5 wt.% as a phosphorus atom content, and with a specific organic sulfonate in an amount of 0.05 to 0.5 mol.% based on the total acid components (excluding the organic sulfonate) of the polyester, and substantially not dyeable with cationic dyes.
