A process for the manufacture of basic Bessemer steel from pig-iron comprises adding red mud to the metal prior to and/or during the conversion. The red mud in porous lumpy form may be added to the converter before the charge of pig iron is poured in and may be added in sintered or briquetted form during the conversion. The usual cooling agents, scrap iron or iron ore, may be replaced wholly or in part by the red mud. It is stated that the addition of red mud produces a slag containing a high percentage of citric acid-soluble phosphate.
|
