<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bridge structure and a method of reinforcing an existing bridge, enabling earthquake motion to be sufficiently reduced at a relatively low cost.SOLUTION: Horizontal support bridge piers 3 supporting only a horizontal load are installed between existing bridge piers 2 supporting an upper structure 4. Each of the existing bridge piers 2 includes a steel post 21 having a square cross section and a beam 22, and a vertical load from the upper structure 4 and a horizontal load are supported by an elastic bearing 5 installed in the beam 22. The horizontal support bridge pier 3 includes four post members 31 each formed from steel pipes, lateral tie members 32 connecting adjoining post members 31, and a beam 33. A horizontal load transmission mechanism 6 installed in the beam 33 only supports the horizontal load from the upper structure 4. Upon earthquake, the horizontal support bridge pier 3 yields by the horizontal load from the upper structure 4, and by a history damping action, attenuates the horizontal load acting from the upper structure 4.</p> |
