<p>The present invention relates to a method for initially determining a prediction direction having a hierarchical correlation for high efficiency video coding (HEVC) compression. The method includes: a first step of performing both unidirectional and bidirectional predictions if a current coding unit (CU) size is 64 x 64 or 32 x 32; a second step of checking a prediction direction of 2N x 2N prediction unit (PU) in a upper 32 x 32 CU if the current CU size is 16 x 16 and performing all Pus of the current CU in a unidirectional mode if the 2N x 2N PU in the upper 32 x 32 CU is encoded in the unidirectional mode; and a third step of performing an initial prediction direction in the same way as the upper 16 x 16 CUs if the current CU size is 8 x 8. The method is capable of remarkably reducing the ME operation time by initially determining a current block mode depending on an upper block mode using support properties for various block sizes of 64 x 64 in 4 x 4 which uses a quad tree structure in an HEVC standard. In particular, as a result of simulating the method of the present invention, compression efficiency has a marginal drop, and the ME operation time of about 22.7% can be reduced.</p> |
