The device (2) has a pressing ram mounted movably along a path of travel extending between a top position and a bottom compaction position in which the pressing ram penetrates into a brewing chamber to form cake of compacted ground. A hydraulic drive mechanism is provided for the pressing ram having a hydraulic pump. A measuring unit measures a volume of hydraulic fluid injected into the drive mechanism. A control circuit (3) determines height of the cake of compacted ground from signals delivered by the measurement unit during travel of pressing rain.
