PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bag making machine and a bag making method which enable calculation of the magnitude of the product pitch in a belt-like film with good accuracy and perform positioning of individual processing parts on an intermittently carried film with good accuracy.SOLUTION: A bag making machine includes: mark detection parts, more specifically mark sensors 54, which detect a detection mark M and are provided in every product pitch on a continuously carried belt-like film W; and a travel amount detection part, more specifically a rotary encoder 52, which detects the travel amount of the continuously carried belt-like film. The magnitude of the product pitch is calculated on the basis of the detection information on the detection mark M obtained by the mark detection part and the travel amount of the film W detected by the travel amount detection part.
