PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a white light emitting diode which has high luminance and low deterioration of light emitting characteristics even when the diode is used for a long period of time.SOLUTION: A light emitting device comprises: a light emitting element having a light emitting layer composed of a semiconductor; and a photoluminescence phosphor which absorbs a part of light emitted from the light emitting element and emits light having a wavelength which is different from that of the absorbed light. In the light emitting device, the light emitting layer of the light emitting element is composed of a nitride-based compound semiconductor, and the photoluminescence phosphor contains a garnet-based phosphor activated with cerium containing at least one element selected from a group consisting of Y, Lu, Sc, La, Gd, and Sm, and at least one element selected from a group consisting of Al, Ga and In. |
