PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a negative electrode material for an alkali metal ion battery that has a larger average layer surface space of a (002) plane compared with a graphite material, and that is excellent in preservation characteristics and charge and discharge capacity.SOLUTION: A negative electrode material is a carbonaceous negative electrode material used for an alkali metal ion battery, and an average layer surface space dof a (002) plane calculated by an X-ray diffraction method using a CuKα ray as a radiation source, is 0.340 nm or more. A halogen content of the negative electrode material is 0.5 ppm or more and less than 50 ppm.
