A ramjet consists of an air intake port 11, a diffuser stage 12, a fuel source 13, a combustion stage 14, and an exhaust nozzle 15. There are fan type motorised impellors 21 in the diffuser stage that draw air into the engine when the aircraft is stationary or moving at any speed below the maximum cruising speed. The impellors are driven by electric motors 22 and preferably separated by stator vanes 23, which require an electrical power source such as a battery 25, or are fed from an alternative source such as a fuel cell system, or an internal combustion engine. There are control systems 24 for the impellors, for the fuel supply, and overall engine control. Impellor direction may be reversed to provide reverse thrust, impellor motors may also act as dynamos in a regenerative braking mode as the craft slows.
|
