The invention comprises compounds of the formula where X is an organic acyl radical containing a -CO- or -SO2- group, Y is a carboxylic acyl radical or an alkyl, aryl, furfurylidene-imino, benzylidene-imino or substituted benzylidene-imino radical, X and Y when acyl being attached to the nitrogen atom by the -CO- or -SO2- group, or X and Y together form a ring containing two -CO- and/or -SO2- groups attached to the nitrogen atom, or a 1,4-dioxotetrahydrophthalazine ring, and Hal being F, Cl or Br, at least one being F or Br; and their production by reacting XYNM, where M is hydrogen or a cation, with the appropriate dihalofluoromethylthio chloride or bromide in an aqueous medium or an inert organic solvent. In examples, X and Y respectively are: dimethylsulphamyl and phenyl; dimethylsulphamyl and p-fluorophenyl; diethylsulphamyl and p-tolyl; benzenesulphonyl and p-tolyl; 3,4-dichlorobenzenesulphonyl and p-chlorophenyl; p-nitrobenzenesulphonyl and methyl; 3-nitro-4-chlorobenzenesulphonyl and methyl; p-toluenesulphonyl and phenyl; ethoxycarbonyl and ethoxycarbonyl; dimethylsulphamyl and o-chlorophenyl; dimethylsulphamyl and p-tolyl; benzenesulphonyl and methyl; p-chlorobenzenesulphonyl and p-chlorophenyl; 3,4- dichlorobenzenesulphonyl and phenyl; p-toluenesulphonyl and ethyl; dimethylsulphamyl and p-chlorophenyl; diethylsulphamyl and o-tolyl; methanesulphonyl and p-tolyl; ethanesulphonyl and o-chlorophenyl; chloromethanesulphonyl and phenyl; benzenesulphonyl and p-chlorophenyl; p-chlorobenzenesulphonyl and methyl; p-toluenesulphonyl and acetyl; benzenesulphonyl and benzylidene-imino; and p-chlorobenzenesulphonyl and p-chlorobenzylideneimino; or X and Y together with the nitrogen make a phthalimide, tetrahydrophthalimide, hexahydrophthalimide, succinimide, 5-benzylidene-2,4-dioxothiazolidine or 5-furfurylidene-2,4-dioxothiazolidine ring, or the imide ring derived from o-carboxybenzene sulphonic acid. Starting materials for such products and others are given. The compounds of the invention are of use as pest control agents (see Group VI).
