Provided is a novel production method which is capable of producing a biaryl compound under conditions suitable for economical and industrial production, said biaryl compound being useful as an intermediate for an angiotensin II receptor antagonist. A method for producing a biaryl compound represented by general formula [3] or a salt thereof, which is characterized by reacting a 2-phenylazole derivative represented by general formula [1] or a salt thereof with a benzene derivative represented by general formula [2] or a salt thereof in the presence of a metal catalyst, a base, and one or more compounds that are selected from the group consisting of (a) metal salts of monocarboxylic acids, (b) metal salts of dicarboxylic acids, (c) metal salts of sulfonic acids and (d) metal salts of phosphoric acid esters or phosphoric acid amides represented by RA xP(O)(OM)y.
