PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for operating an internal combustion engine having at least three cylinders, especially a gas engine.SOLUTION: A cylinder characteristic signal is acquired from each cylinder, a reference value is generated by the signal from the cylinder. At least one combustion parameter corresponding to the cylinder is controlled as a deviation function of the signal from the reference value, the signal tracks the reference value, and a median of the signal is generated as a reference value.
