An air conditioning system 10, for a mine refuge, comprising a rigid shell 24 having a door 28; a passive condenser 26 in the shell alongside the door; an explosion proof permissible enclosure 22 disposed in the shell; a first fluid pump (58) disposed in the enclosure; a portable evaporator 18 disposed in the shell; a controller to control the evaporator and a battery array 20. The system may have a purge system including pressurised nitrogen. Also independently claimed is an inflatable chamber having an air lock.
