1292180 Hydrogen purification process HYDROCARBON RESEARCH Inc 11 Dec 1970 [29 Dec 1969] 59103/70 Heading F4P Separation of low boiling contaminants e.g. carbon monoxide, methane, ethylene and ethane from a compressed crude hydrogen stream, is effected by cooling and partial condensing the feed stream in an exchanger 2, separating at 6, withdrawing gaseous effluent at 5, further cooling and condensing the effluent at 10, separating at 14, withdrawing gaseous effluent at 13, further cooling at 18, separating at 22, withdrawing condensate from each separator 6, 14, 22, expanding it at 8,12, 16 and passing the so-called condensate reversely through the exchangers 18, 10, 2, passing gaseous effluent from separator 22 through a line 21 and one or other of conventional absorbers 34, 38, 42, 46 and thence through a product outlet line 65 from which is withdrawn through a branch line 69 a portion of purified hydrogen which is expanded at a turbine 50 and returned through exchangers 18, 10 and used to regenerate a contaminated absorber. In operation only one absorber is on stream during any one period and after its on-stream period is then depressurized, contaminated by a reverse flow of pure low pressure hydrogen in a line 81 and then repressurized before being put on-stream again.
