A method of growing eukaryotic cells, tissues and organs by culturing the cells, tissues and organs in media containing camel blood serum as a replacement for the previously considesred essential nutrient bovine fetal calf serum. In particular the present invention provides a method of culturing cancer cell lines successfully using adult camel serum in full replacement of the conventional essential 10% bovine fetal calf serum normally used in the cell growth media formulation. The present invention also provides a method of producing biotherapeutic glycoproteins which do not contain the non-human sialic acid molecule, N-glycolyneuraminic acid (Neu5Gc). These biotherapeutic glycoproteins may be produced in several ways, including recombinantly, as well as those derived from transgenic camelids, as well as human stem cells if maintained on non-human feeder cell layers and/or cultured in the presence of camelid sera or camelid-derived cell culture supplements. |
