PURPOSE: A method for treating bipolar disorder is provided to treat comorbidities including manic episode, major depressive episode, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and drug abuse with reduced side effects. CONSTITUTION: A method for treating bipolar disorder comprises the steps of administering therapeutically effective amount of a compound of chemical formula 1 or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or amide thereof to a mammal in need of treatment. The compound of chemical formula 1 is an enantiomer substantially free of other enantiomers or an enantiomeric mixture wherein one enantiomer of the compound of chemical formula 1 predominates. One enantiomer predominates to the extent of about 90% or greater.
