The device has detecting devices provided at four observation points for detecting a rebound condition of a chassis (18) of a mobile crane vehicle. The detecting devices include a displacement transducer (14), which detects distances between the chassis and a vehicle axle (16) or a device fixedly connected with the axle. The transducer forwards a value to a comparator for comparison with a previously determined allowed maximum values. The comparator outputs a monitoring signal during exceedance of a preset fixed value at the points, where the signal displays that stability is not achieved. The displacement transducer is an optical measuring device. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a device for continuously determining a stability of a mobile crane vehicle.
